I’m an efficiency junkie. If a tool can shave 20 minutes off my deployment or help me refactor a messy codebase, I’m all for using it.
Lately, that means living in AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Honestly, I can’t imagine shipping code without them anymore. They make me feel like I have a superpower.
But as a Lead Security Engineer, those same superpowers are starting to haunt me at night.
I’ve spent my career thus far securing systems, human identities, and building perimeters. But in 2026, the perimeter has moved inside the IDE. Our developers are now running AI agents with production access, the ability to execute code, and the power to hit APIs - all while our traditional security stack sits there, completely oblivious and in the dark.
Why our current stack is blind (And Yours Was Too)
I’ve seen this firsthand in our own repos. We’ll be running a security audit and realize that an agent just quietly executed a series of local tools to "fix" a bug. No alerts. No logs in the SIEM.
From an architectural perspective, these agents behave more like Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) than software:
- They use C2-like channels: Communicating via LLM and MCP (Model Context Protocol) calls that bypass standard proxies.
- They "Live off the Land": They don't need to download malware; they just use the legitimate tools already on the dev machines.
- The Identity Gap: Your EDR is looking for a virus. It isn’t looking for a "helpful" agent that just exfiltrated an .env file because it thought it was helping you debug a connection issue.
Why I’m Betting on Ceros (And Why You Should Too)
